Stimulating challenges in a great working atmosphere

‘After graduating, I wanted to do something where you specifically work on something tangible, where you can see the product of what you’ve worked on, so not just a basic research role. Applied research, where you actually see the result. And I wanted a job that was challenging, with the chance to solve problems, much more than a regular draughtsman or structural engineer role. At VIRO, we’re working on improving our machines, making them lighter or faster for example. But to do that, you need to bring your own ideas.’ Thijs Cals is 26 and has a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from Zuyd University in Heerlen, plus a master’s degree from the Eindhoven University of Technology, where he specialized in polymer technology. ‘After my master’s, it was tricky finding a potential employer because we were in the second wave of Covid, so a lot of companies were reluctant to take on new staff. Before that, it wasn’t hard to get a job as a technician, but things are getting back to normal now.’ Thijs had already come across VIRO during a company presentation while studying for his bachelor’s degree. He went on to start a five-month internship at VIRO between his bachelor’s and master’s degrees, doing research into building 3D models from photographs and how that could be applied on the job.

‘Once I’d finished my master’s, I was able to go back to working at VIRO. I did look at other companies first to see what they were offering, but in the end, my heart was set on VIRO. For me, it’s important to have my mind challenged, but also the working atmosphere needs to be good. At many other places I came across, it was either one or the other. What I love about VIRO is that you get the best of both worlds.’

Diversity in projects and customers

‘VIRO is an engineering company that works partly on its own projects, but mainly executes projects on behalf of third parties. That means that you typically spend a few weeks or months or more working on a project. In Mechanical Engineering, where I work, a project tends to last a year or two. The advantage of working here is that you constantly come into contact with other companies and work alongside other colleagues at VIRO. Everyone works in their own way, so you can discover different types of people and practices.

That variety keeps it interesting, and that diversity also means you build up a good network that you can draw on if you ever have any difficult questions.’ ‘Some of those soft skills are important to have for an engineer, so you know how to handle various situations. VIRO provides the support in the form of training to develop those skills – solid, engaging courses that use actors. Your job is to discuss a change in budget or deadline with them, for example. And there are different characters and different types of reactions. I’ve done a lot of that now.’

Career

‘VIRO offers me a lot of different opportunities for my career in the long term. This first year, I’m mainly working on becoming a better structural engineer. That’s what my work and my development through the courses are all about. In the long run, you develop your own specialism more as an engineer or as a manager or as a generalist. I haven’t decided what to do yet, although I think I’d like to specialize further. VIRO has provided excellent support for that process, keeping track of whether you’re still on the right path in the form of a personal development plan. So, in that sense, you are well looked after. I’m very excited about the project I’m currently working on, but if even if I wasn’t, there are also opportunities to take it in another direction. I can always approach my supervisor.’

Wonderful atmosphere

The working atmosphere at VIRO was one reason why Thijs chose the company. But what makes the atmosphere so great? ‘There’s not much of a hierarchy here. Everyone is more or less on an equal level, which makes working together much nicer. You can also approach colleagues who aren’t directly involved in your project. For example, if I have a question about a difficult FEM calculation, my colleague will take a couple of hours out to help me. Plus, the atmosphere is just so friendly; everyone is really nice here, and we regularly chat about things other than just work.’ ‘If you want to work at a company where you can really add value, then that’s one great reason to get in touch with VIRO. If you’re looking for a stimulating challenge but a great atmosphere too, then you’ll fit right in here.’
